What is RMU Ready?

RMU Ready is a comprehensive life and career plan designed for each RMU student. From the day they step on campus through their first professional year, they will follow a personalized roadmap to build essential skills, gain real-world experience, and achieve their unique goals.

Career Readiness Academies

To help students take their career readiness to the next level, the Career Readiness Academies provide targeted learning opportunities to further develop the essential competencies employers are looking for. Students can gain the tools and knowledge they need to stand out and thrive in their career journey.

Online Career-Readiness Resources

Students have access to a variety of online resources designed to help them become Career Ready. Each resource plays a vital role in supporting students on their journey towards a successful career, assisting with:

  • exploring various career paths
  • identifying suitable job and internship opportunities
  • crafting a professional resume
  • honing essential skills like networking and interviewing
  • gaining experience through virtual work programs

Encourage Student Engagement

Students are often compelled to take action following an email, class or discussion with a trusted professor, advisor or staff member. By partnering with the Career and Professional Development Center and highlighting the significance of career readiness and early professional development, you can make a significant difference in their future success.

Faculty and staff can champion the services offered by the Career Development Center to RMU students. Encourage students to take advantage of these resources early in their academic journeys. The most successful students are those who start focusing on their careers from their first year. For more information, direct students to the Career Development Center’s Students webpage.

The Career Development Center organizes two career fairs and a variety of career-related events and workshops throughout the academic year, including employer-led events. You can support the center by announcing and promoting these events in your classes. Alternatively, consider incorporating career fair or event attendance as an assignment or extra credit opportunity. Faculty and staff are also encouraged to attend these events to network with employers, forge connections, and gain insights into various industries.

The Career and Professional Development Center offers a series of academies available to all RMU students, that provide practical life and professional skills beyond the scope of traditional coursework. These academies support the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) eight career readiness competencies.

Students gain invaluable professional experience, learn about the world of work and make connections within it through internships or job opportunities.  Encourage students to review the Career and Professional Development’s Job & Internship listings pulled directly from Handshake, an online recruiting platform to access employer profiles, and job and internship postings from all of our approved employers.

NACE Guide:  A Faculty Guide to Ethical and Legal Standards in Student Employment

The Career and Professional Development Center facilitates the Academic Internship Program for most majors.  Direct students to our webpage to learn more about the program, criteria by major, link to the appropriate forms and CPDC contact information by academic school.

If an employer contacts you about engaging with RMU, please refer them to the Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC) and our Employer webpage. We will handle the necessary approval in Handshake, which is mandatory for all employers wanting to connect with RMU students through the CPDC. Additionally, we will share the opportunity with appropriate students and seek other ways to strengthen the relationship with the employer.

Encourage students to participate in the “Resume Writing” program, emphasizing that a resume is a student’s professional document showcasing their skills, education, experiences, and accomplishments. It is their personal story tailored for potential employers, universities, and other professional connections.

Faculty and staff can create a student user account in Handshake, so they can explore the system first-hand and advise students on relevant opportunities and events.  If interested in an account contact the Career and Professional Development Center via email: careercenter@rmu.edu

Faculty and staff can champion the resources offered by the Career Development Center that are specific to RMU international students. Encourage all international students to take advantage of these resources early in their academic journeys.
