Give a brief overview of your experience at RMU.
Some of my activities on campus include being a tour guide, working in our Career & Professional Development Center, Pi Sigma Epsilon, and the Rockwell Fellows. Through the help of RMU, I attended various Sales Center events to connect with industry leaders, and I received an internship in the marketing department at Fort Pitt Capital Group.
Describe a typical day as an intern. What were your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities?
I had a wide range of responsibilities including content creation and creating graphics for our social media pages. Additionally, I assisted in making marketing materials such as email sends or doing data projects for marketing research. I also helped with planning multiple events including our Shred-It event and our Wine Event. Day-to-day responsibilities would change from the previous items depending on what was occurring at that time. When I came in, I would check my email every morning and connect with my supervisors on long and short term projects for the day and week, and get started on my work. Depending on the day we had meetings with other departments or the firm, so I learned to manage my time effectively.
What are your key takeaways from your experience? What skills did you gain from this internship?
I have improved my communication skills from written to oral communication. I also developed creative thinking and problem solving skills for various tasks that needed to be completed when event planning. A key takeaway that I learned was from my supervisor who told me that it is better to take more time to complete something to the best of my ability, than to complete it quicker and not do my best work. With this advice, I spoke up if I needed less or more work to effectively manage my workload.
How has RMU prepared you for this internship?
RMU has prepared me for this internship because I expanded upon concepts in the classroom into a professional experience. Through various professional development activities that I have participated in at RMU such as competitions for AMA and PSE, I expanded upon my skills being developed. I was able to collaboratively bring new ideas to my team and understand the value of teamwork in a work setting. As an example, I was once given a project for a graphic and I had a great start, but both of my supervisors came up with some additional ideas that enhanced our entire graphic completely.
What are your career goals and next steps?
I will be completing an internship this summer with PNC Bank and completing my MBA at RMU next year. Following that, I will be looking for a job in marketing, most likely at a financial-services based company in Pittsburgh.
